Solutions Architect

Job Description

Duties include:
Provide expert input to support the creation and maintenance of strategic technical vision and the technical interpretation of the business strategy goals
Maintain a detailed architecture and strategy roadmap for the Core Network
Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with existing and potential suppliers to ensure the vision is aligned with industry direction and influence supplier roadmaps
Drive ‘technical enabler’ projects onto the project roadmap to deliver the technical vision and lay foundations for business project delivery
Provide input to internal policies
Using specialist expertise, prepare Solution Assessments ensuring that they are comprehensive and aligned to the strategic technical vision, where possible driving fixes to historic bespoke solutions and non-conformances
Maintain knowledge currency on technologies and best practices, specifically in relation to the Core Network area
Ensure statutory, security, regulatory and internal policy compliance is maintained in solution development, and best practise is followed
Approve any essential new bespoke solutions and maintain a register of such bespoke implementations, and review regularly
Act as the key technical interface between the company and vendors during solution selection processes
Lead and oversee the implementation of highly complex technical development initiatives in the Core Network
Perform ‘first office’ pilot technical implementations on new solutions, platforms and technologies to ensure technical designs can be implemented and to maintain expert knowledge
Undertake supplier evaluations and tenders to deliver cost-effective best of breed solutions, in line with the technical vision and strategy to meet specific project goals
Act as a technical design authority by validating low level design in support of project delivery technical expertise within project teams and design changes identified from operations
On occasion, support lead operational managers in the technology group, to prepare Business Requirement Specifications through interpretation of business objectives and input of expert knowledge on systems and operational processes
Support operational managers, in the technology group, with platform lifecycle management
Advise lead operational staff to establish, operate and review best practice routines and documentation
Provide expert technical knowledge on core network systems to all areas of the business
Work with Managers from other areas of the business to identify and establish the development needs of individuals responsible for the delivery of customer services in relation to Core Network services
Provide 4th line support on critical and complex network faults, liaising with suppliers and operational teams to ensure swift return to service.
Validate any operational workarounds, which force network away from technical vision and capture within central register
Provide mentoring of more junior technical personnel within core technology groups, through training and coaching, leading by example and encouraging technical and personal development

Skills and experience required:
Strategic thinking and an understanding of supporting principles such as TOGAF
Excellent knowledge of core telecommunications technologies (such as network, server, storage, virtualization and security)
Significant industry qualifications (e.g. CCIE, NP, IP, DP etc) together with a strong academic grounding (Degree-level)
Project Management training (e.g. PRINCE2)
Vendor certifications (e.g. HP, HMC, Cisco, VMware, MS, Linux and Citrix)
Vendor neutral certifications (e.g. CompTIA, LPI, (ISC)2, IET and BCS to name a few)
At least five years’ experience in core technologies (importantly in IMS, ISDN, Mobile)
Previous experience managing Core Networks (OSS and BSS)
Previous experience delivering complex and high-value projects
Experience supporting critical telecommunications core network infrastructure (or business critical IT)
Amazing research capability and evidence of developing innovative solutions

Awesome communication, interpersonal and influencing expertise
Familiar with the ITIL principles
